Venus McCrea: The Goddess Girl

Born and raised in Washington, DC, I started creating art in the 3rd grade out of boredom in class. Noticing my talent, but not liking when I was using it, my teacher began to encourage me to create art for bulletin boards around class, special class projects and soon after entered me in my first school based art contest. After winning first place, my mother further supported my talent by encouraging me to enter in citywide art contests, where many pieces are still available to view at such places as: The Washington Teacher’s Union Headquarters, Girl Scout Council of the District of Columbia, the DC Supreme Court and the National Zoo.

In 1999, I attended and graduated from Duke Ellington School of the Arts majoring in Visual Arts. Furthering my education, I attended and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 2003, majoring in Illustration.

As and artist, I am intrigued by nature and love experimenting with new ways of seeing the world around me. Art movements I am influenced by are Surrealism, Romanticism, and Symbolism.
